Worry, Difficulty & Decisions

In times of worry and grief

O Allah, I am Your servant, the son of Your male servant and the son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand; Your command over me is certain and Your decree concerning me is just. I ask You by every name that belongs to You—whether You named Yourself with it, revealed it in Your Book, taught it to one of Your creation, or kept it with You in the knowledge of the unseen—to make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sadness and the departure of my worry.

Istikharah — seeking Allah’s guidance

Allāhumma innī astakhīruka bi-ʿilmik, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratik, wa asʾaluka min faḍlika al-ʿaẓīm. Fa-innaka taqdiru wa lā aqdir, wa taʿlamu wa lā aʿlam, wa Anta ʿAllāmu al-ghuyūb. Allāhumma in kunta taʿlamu anna hādhā al-amra [name the matter] khayrun lī fī dīnī wa maʿāshī wa ʿāqibati amrī — aw qāla: ʿājili amrī wa ājilih — faqdurhu lī wa yassirhu lī, thumma bārik lī fīh. Wa in kunta taʿlamu anna hādhā al-amra sharrun lī fī dīnī wa maʿāshī wa ʿāqibati amrī — aw qāla: fī ʿājili amrī wa ājilih — faṣrifhu ʿannī, waṣrifnī ʿanhu, waqdur liya al-khayra ḥaythu kāna, thumma arḍinī bih.

O Allah, I seek the best choice through Your knowledge, seek ability through Your power, and ask You from Your immense favour. You are able and I am not; You know and I do not; You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know this matter to be good for my faith, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair—now and later—then decree it for me, make it easy for me and bless it for me. If You know it to be harmful for my faith, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair—now and later—then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Decree good for me wherever it may be, then make me content with it.
